Whilst larger canals are still used for commercial traffic there are miles of waterways, which meander through the countryside at a more leisurely pace. As one of the principal modes of transport in ages past, the canals link the most historic and culturally rich towns, passing enroute through pastoral landscapes.
The decision to begin our odyssey in Flanders, was based upon its central location in Europe and its unique scenery and cultural attractions. France is only a day's sail South, Holland a day North. Belgium is also renowned for its cuisine, which even the French journey to savour!
